Settling Chamber

Protecting Downstream Infrastructure with Settling Chambers

Settling chambers are often used as the first stage in a stormwater treatment train or as a pre-treatment device for other stormwater systems. By capturing coarse sediment and debris early, they help protect and extend the life of downstream treatment devices such as sand filters, soakholes, proprietary filtration units, and wetlands. This staged approach maximises pollutant removal and reduces maintenance needs for more sensitive or complex devices further along the system.

How Settling Chambers Work

Stormwater enters the chamber and is held long enough for heavier particles to settle to the bottom, while cleaner water flows out through the outlet. This process helps reduce sediment loads, protect downstream infrastructure, and improve water quality.

Why Maintenance Matters

Regular maintenance is essential to keep settling chambers functioning effectively. Over time, sediment and debris accumulate in the chamber, reducing its capacity and treatment efficiency. If left unchecked, this buildup can lead to blockages, flooding, and non-compliance with council requirements.
