API Separator

Preventing Water Pollution with API Separation

An API separator is a specialized device used to separate oil and suspended solids from stormwater or industrial runoff before it enters a drainage system or waterway. Using gravity and a multi-chambered design, API separators allow oil to rise to the surface and solids to settle at the bottom, ensuring cleaner water is discharged and helping prevent environmental pollution.

How API Separators Work

Stormwater or process water enters the separator and flows slowly through a series of chambers. Heavier solids settle to the bottom, while lighter oils and hydrocarbons float to the top. The clarified water exits the system, while collected oil and solids are retained for safe removal and disposal.

Why Maintenance Matters

Regular maintenance is essential to keep API separators functioning effectively. Over time, oil and solids accumulate in the chambers, reducing treatment efficiency and increasing the risk of blockages, flooding, or non-compliance with council and environmental requirements.

At Dutton Stormwater, we provide comprehensive API separator maintenance services across New Zealand. Our team inspects, removes accumulated oil and solids, and ensures your separator is operating efficiently and in line with environmental standards.
