Tradewaste Interceptor

Protecting Infrastructure:
The Role of Trade Waste Interceptors

Trade waste interceptors are essential devices in industrial and commercial settings, designed to trap, remove, or separate oil, grease, fuel, and sediment from wastewater before it enters the tradewaste system. By capturing these contaminants, trade waste interceptors help ensure compliance with regulations and support sustainable environmental practices. You’ll commonly find these systems at workshops, manufacturing facilities, food processing plants, and service stations—anywhere oily or contaminated wastewater is generated.

How Trade Waste Interceptors Work

Wastewater flows into the interceptor, where gravity and a multi-chambered design allow heavier sediments to settle at the bottom and lighter oils, grease, and fuels to rise to the top. The clarified water exits the system, while collected oil and solids are retained for safe removal and disposal.

Why Maintenance Matters

Regular maintenance is essential to keep trade waste interceptors functioning effectively. Over time, oil, grease, and sediment build up in the chambers, reducing treatment efficiency and increasing the risk of blockages, flooding, or non-compliance with council and environmental requirements.

Professional Trade Waste Interceptor Maintenance Services

At Dutton Stormwater, we provide comprehensive trade waste interceptor maintenance services across New Zealand. Our team inspects, removes accumulated oil and solids, and ensures your interceptor is operating efficiently and in line with environmental standards. For underground interceptors, maintenance may require confined space entry, which is performed by our specially trained technicians following strict safety protocols.

Recommended Service Frequency

Trade waste interceptors typically require maintenance every six to twelve months, depending on site activity and pollutant loading. During each service, we assess the interceptor’s condition and includes a job summary with any recommendations in your service report.
