Hynds Smart Chamber

Reliable Oil and Grit Interception

The Hynds Smart Chamber is a simple and effective oil and grit separation system, widely used to remove residual oils and settle solids from stormwater before it enters the drainage network. You’ll often find these units at service stations, garages, truck wash-down areas, driveways, and small sealed or paved parking areas—anywhere that needs to manage oil and sediment runoff efficiently.

How the Hynds Smart Chamber Works

The Smart Chamber uses a twin-chambered design with four compartments to slow water flow, allowing grit and sediment to settle out while capturing oils on special Smart Pak or Smart Sponge® media. These media fully encapsulate recovered oil, transforming it into a stable solid that won’t leach back into the environment. The watertight seal between the lid and tank walls ensures reliable operation, even in trafficable locations.

Why Maintenance Matters

Regular maintenance is essential for the Smart Chamber to perform at its best. Over time, sediment and oil build up inside the chambers and on the Smart Pak media. The Smart Paks need to be replaced to maintain effective oil absorption. Neglecting maintenance can lead to reduced treatment efficiency, flooding, and non-compliance with environmental regulations.

Professional Smart Chamber Maintenance Services

At Dutton Stormwater, we provide comprehensive Smart Chamber maintenance services across New Zealand. Our team inspects, removes sediment, cleans, and replaces Smart Pak media as needed, ensuring your system remains clear, clean, and compliant. For underground Smart Chambers, maintenance may require confined space entry, which is performed by our specially trained technicians following strict safety protocols. All removed pollutants and spent Smart Paks are disposed of according to local authority regulations.

Recommended Service Frequency

Smart Chambers typically require servicing every six to twelve months, depending on site activity and pollutant loading. During each service, we assess the Smart chamber’s condition and includes a job summary with any recommendations in your service report.
