Urban Bio Filter

Breathing Life into NZ’s Infrastructure

Urban bio-filters are self-watering, low-maintenance gardens that bring green infrastructure into the heart of New Zealand’s cities. These systems are designed to capture and treat stormwater runoff using layers of biofiltration media, vegetation, and carefully selected plants. Not only do urban bio-filters help break down pollution and sequester contaminants, but they also remove nutrients like nitrogen, supporting both water quality and urban biodiversity.

How Urban Bio-Filters Work

As stormwater flows into the bio-filter, it passes through a mulch layer and engineered soil media, where sediment, nutrients, heavy metals, and hydrocarbons are captured and broken down by plant roots and soil microbes. Some urban bio-filters are equipped with underground filtration-media cartridges for even greater pollutant removal. Treated water is either absorbed by the plants, infiltrated into the ground, or collected by an underdrain for safe discharge to the stormwater network.

Why Maintenance Matters

Routine maintenance is essential to keep urban bio-filters functioning effectively. Over time, sediment and debris can clog the filter media, reducing its ability to remove pollutants and increasing the risk of flooding. Weeds, unhealthy plants, and erosion can also impact both performance and appearance. Regular care ensures your bio-filter continues to provide environmental benefits, support urban biodiversity, and comply with council requirements.
