Soakhole

Soakhole systems are a common solution for stormwater disposal in New Zealand, especially in areas where direct discharge to streams or the stormwater network isn’t possible. Soakhole devices allow stormwater to soak naturally into the ground, helping to recharge groundwater and reduce surface flooding. You’ll often find soakhole systems at residential properties, commercial sites, and rural locations with permeable soils.

Stormwater is directed into a chamber or pit, typically filled with gravel or stone, where it gradually infiltrates into the surrounding soil. In some designs, particularly those with concrete bottoms, bores are drilled deep underground and fitted with siphons to facilitate water movement. This setup helps filter out sediment and allows water to disperse slowly, minimising erosion and supporting sustainable site management.

Regular maintenance is essential to keep soakhole systems working efficiently. Over time, sediment, silt, and organic matter can build up in the chamber, blocking bores and reducing infiltration rates and increasing the risk of flooding or surface ponding. Neglecting maintenance can also lead to blockages and system failure.
